The official announcement of the UFC event’s fight card at the White House has elicited diverse reactions from both fans and combatants.

Scheduled for June 14th on the White House lawn as part of the America Freedom 250 celebration, the event comprises six bouts, including two championship fights. However, former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling expressed considerable disappointment with the lineup.

“It’s only six fights, and that’s the best six fights they could make?” Sterling questioned, indicating his underwhelming impression of the selections.

Ahead of the announcement, President Donald Trump had stated the event would feature all title fights, while UFC CEO Dana White had promised the “best fight card” in the promotion’s history. Sterling believes the UFC matchmakers failed to deliver on these high expectations.

“That’s what they said they were going to do. They said that. We didn’t do that,” Sterling remarked. He continued, “The 135-pound fight with O’Malley is cool if it were [Cory] Sandhagen. That’s a fight that means something. Not saying the Aiemann Zahabi fight doesn’t mean anything; it’s given Zahabi a great opportunity. But for this card, I thought they would have put more of the higher-ranked guys. And I think the matchup that everyone wants to see is two long, rangy strikers that are great at moving their feet compete while they’re in their prime. Make the matchup before, I don’t know, before it doesn’t make sense anymore. That’s kind of how I’m looking at this.”

The former champion elaborated, “You have this marquee matchup that you could make on this card. Sandhagen’s been calling for it for a long time and then you decide, ‘Oh, here’s Zahabi.’ I don’t really get it.”

Regarding another bout, Sterling commented, “The [Michael] Chandler fight, I get he’s American, a diehard American and all of that. That’s cool, very patriotic. But him and Ruffy just doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense other than you’re trying to give Ruffy a big step up. Cool. It’s still a fun fight, but it’s not the fight that, to me, doesn’t really mean much. It’s a win if Ruffy can win. I imagine he’s going to come out as a big favorite. No slight to Chandler, but at the same time, being real, I think Ruffy should have been fighting somebody else if you’re going to put him on the card. Give it more of a fight that means something like title shot implications or something.”

“You say you’re going to deliver a big massive card. I just don’t know if this is exactly it,” Sterling concluded. “I’m not trying to nitpick the whole thing. I just expected a little bit more, I don’t want to say name value, but fights that mean something at the highest point of each division that they bring to the table. I just think there were a couple more fights that they could have probably done instead.”

E eu acho que o confronto que todos querem ver são dois strikers longos e de longo alcance, ótimos em movimentar os pés, competindo enquanto estão no auge. Faça o confronto antes, não sei, antes que não faça mais sentido. É assim que estou vendo isso.”

O ex-campeão detalhou: “Você tem esse confronto de destaque que poderia fazer neste card. Sandhagen está pedindo isso há muito tempo e então você decide, ‘Ah, aqui está Zahabi.’ Eu realmente não entendo.”

Sobre outra luta, Sterling comentou: “A luta de [Michael] Chandler, eu entendo que ele é americano, um americano fervoroso e tudo mais. Isso é legal, muito patriótico. Mas ele e Ruffy não fazem muito sentido, a não ser que você esteja tentando dar um grande passo para Ruffy. Legal. Ainda é uma luta divertida, mas não é a luta que, para mim, realmente significa muito. É uma vitória se Ruffy puder vencer. Imagino que ele será o grande favorito. Sem desrespeito a Chandler, mas ao mesmo tempo, sendo realista, acho que Ruffy deveria estar lutando contra outra pessoa se você vai colocá-lo no card. Dê-lhe uma luta que signifique algo como implicações para uma disputa de título ou algo assim.”

“Você diz que vai entregar um card grandioso. Eu só não sei se é exatamente isso”, concluiu Sterling. “Não estou tentando ser picuinhas com tudo. Eu apenas esperava um pouco mais, não quero dizer valor de nome, mas lutas que significassem algo no ponto mais alto de cada divisão que eles trouxessem para a mesa. Eu só acho que havia mais algumas lutas que eles poderiam ter feito em vez disso.”
